After recovering from back-to-back well being scares – a coronary heart assault after which thyroid most cancers – Leslie Latchman, 60, all of the sudden began speaking about bucket lists. With household ties in Jamaica and India, he’s no stranger to journey, however in recent times his journey plans have gotten greater and brought him additional. Topping his listing: Antarctica.

Leslie’s travel-savvy son Les, 29, was sport to hitch him. His spouse of 38 years, Kamla, was much less enthusiastic. She’d a lot reasonably go someplace scorching. However they booked three spots on an 11-day Better of Antarctica journey aboard Intrepid’s Ocean Endeavour, and, true to type, Kamla began organising.

‘My mum was actually not that eager to go, to be sincere,’ says Les. ‘She hates the chilly. But when the previous few years have taught our household something, it’s that life is brief. My mother and father at the moment are on a mission to benefit from their time collectively and see the world whereas they’re nonetheless bodily in a position.’

The journey begins

So in November 2022, they set sail. From their base off the coast of the icy continent, Les and his mother and father would typically break up as much as discover and be a part of actions – kayaking between icebergs, whale-watching from a Zodiac, waddling amongst penguin colonies.

‘I did the polar plunge – that was depraved,’ says Les. We sailed into the crater of a collapsed volcano, known as Deception Island, to do it. It was freezing, clearly. And afterwards all of us had a vodka shot because the spectators cheered; that was a spotlight for me.’

On the finish of every day, they’d meet up for dinner and share their tales from the day. 5 days in, Les requested his mother and father how issues had been going. ‘My dad stated, “it’s superb, past expectations,”’ Les recounts. ‘I requested my mum, and he or she was wanting on the menu. She slowly introduced it as much as cowl her face and simply began crying.’

It’s like that once you’re on the market, he says. It’s simply overwhelming emotion. In tears, Kamla advised him it was in contrast to something she’d ever seen earlier than.

‘And the panorama isn’t a flat, white sheet – it’s extremely mountainous, with peaks over 3000 metres jutting out of the ocean like daggers. It’s all so dramatic and our expectations had been blown out of the water.

A shift in perspective

‘Somebody got here as much as me sooner or later and stated, “I can’t imagine you’re travelling together with your mother and father,”’ Les says. ‘After which they stated, “I want I might expertise Antarctica with my mother and father.” I realised then that I’d most likely taken the entire thing as a right. ‘I’ve completed numerous solo travelling in my life, as a result of I’m fairly single-minded at instances, and I’m not going to attend for anyone… However travelling by your self could be fairly lonely, and I don’t assume it’s as enriching as once you journey with individuals. Dad has his sights on the Arctic now, so who is aware of, perhaps we’ll go collectively. Making extra recollections with those that I like, that’s primary on my bucket listing now.’
